From Chippy Tea to the Golden Arches: The Real Power of Branding

I want to talk about branding and graphics design and why it can be beneficial to an organisation – be it a start-up or a well established company.

Good quality branding which is considered through all elements of the business (not just a logo that might have been made on one of the free services) can transform a business or organisation and help to give their customers the confidence and trust needed for that organisation to thrive.

A very well done brand can transform the thought processes of millions of people.

Consider the one that uses Golden Arches… you all know who it is.

If you visit there you will quite happily pay £2.19 for a standard Medium portion of fries. You know what you are getting and we are told quality is the same worldwide. It’s part of the meal and you probably need something else ten minutes later.

But, the local chip shop down the road – without the gigantic marketing budget – sells a portion of chips (probably enough to feed the whole family) for around £2.00. You know where the potatoes have come from and probably know the person serving by name.

But it all comes down to branding. Chippy Tea or Sids do not have a globally recognised brand that has convinced billions of people that that is the place of first resort. So off we all trot to the Golden Arches.

This is not a criticism – it’s just the power of the brand.

Another example is the football tournament currently happening in the colonies.

The organising committee have managed to make their brand so pervasive that the American public are not referring to it as the World Cup – they are referring to it as FIFA (the rest of the world is more enlightened). But it shows how consistent messaging and visuals can be effective – but both these examples require billions of pound notes to achieve.

That is not to say that effective brand management and messaging can’t be achieved on a more manageable budget by any company – it just needs planning, discipline and a good set of guidelines that help you out.

From adverts in the local parish magazine, to the website, your profile on LinkedIn or instagram, business cards and posters in the local Coop – even the smallest business can make themselves known.

Once the graphics are established and consistent those companies will then have workwear printed, PPE bought, coasters and mugs as giveaways – all reaffirming the same message and same visual so the next time you need a cleaning company for your office suites – you have seen ‘Spic and Span’ cleaners on a really nicely done van and or on workers with smart t-shirts – they all look professional so you give them a ring.

The branding has worked. New customers are on the way.

So if your (or one of your customers’) brand, graphics website or workwear need some TLC to get them to the next step of their development – we want to talk to them.
